What is life without a little risk?

…especially when you are getting full benefits too?

Medical science has made commendable advancements in the past few decades. Dental implants are one of those applaudable achievements that are helping to transform lives. But, how come dental treatment helps in transforming lives?

Well, it is one of those treatments which has loads of benefits along with a few eliminable risks… and those benefits are almost life-changing.

How on earth mankind managed to invent a treatment that is closest to the natural tooth function. What are the components of the implant restoration procedure?

Let’s have a look at the dental implant procedure to derive some wisdom from it.

(Our focus would be single-tooth dental implant restoration in this article.)

Before the extraction of your damaged tooth, your dentist might ask for your medical health condition. Dental treatments can get affected by diabetes, heart disease, liver disease, thyroid disease, and hypertension. Therefore, as a precautionary measure, your dentist will find an alternative for the sedatives. This will help in the prevention of jaw bone death or osteonecrosis.

Extraction of the damaged tooth:

The tooth extraction process can be of two types:

  • Simple extraction: your tooth will be extracted after injecting local sedative, with a tool.
  • Surgical extraction: your tooth extraction will be carried out with the help of a strong sedative, and your dentist also removes damaged tissue or bone along with the teeth.

P.S. your dentist will eliminate this process in the case of a missing tooth. (Duh, obviously!)

Bone grafting and osseointegration:

Osseo is a Greek word derived from “osteon” which means “bone,” and integrate is a Latin word that means “to make whole.” This is the significant step of implant restoration. O-si-o-inti-gray-tion is also known as bone grafting. It is a process in which the bone is left to heal after placing a synthetic bone for three to six months.

This is the case for a damaged tooth, whereas, the case for a missing tooth would be slightly different. The process is known as “onlay bone graft” where a donor’s bone is laid on the recipient’s natural bone. This process requires more time to heal (from six to eight-month).

The aforementioned was the case for the lower jaw, but for the upper jaw, your dentist would have to perform sinus augmentation. In this process, the dentist will lift the “sinus floor” and more bone is grafted into it.

Implant placement:

Once the osseointegration process is completed, and the bone becomes strong enough to cope with the advanced implant steps. The placement will be carried out. The term “implant” is referred to the screw or “abutment.”

After implant placement, an impression is taken to custom-made a dental crown. The crown is attached to the screw via cement or a screw.

Is dental implant treatment painful?

Nope, the process becomes easier with the anesthetic shots injected. However, you can expect some discomfort post-treatment.
