The Procedure

There are two parts to a dental deep cleaning procedure: periodontal scaling (gum cleaning) and root planing. To perform the procedure, the dentist will use electric/ultrasonic instruments or manual scaling tools, or a combination of both. During the first visit, the dentist will perform scaling, and complete the root planing during the second session.

The scaling procedure removes the plaque and tarter found below the gum line. Meanwhile, root planing is the cleaning and smoothing of the tooth root. This process allows the gums to reattach to the tooth, hence, reducing the size of the gum pocket, which may trap debris.
